Finger Paint Masterclass Empty
PostSubject: Finger Paint Masterclass   Finger Paint Masterclass Empty3rd January 2017, 9:48 pm

hoi,
having defined my skill level in the title, i still want to show a pic or two.

but first i should get my own paints.. i used a friends colors, just adding a pot needed now and then. but with so many minis looming on the horizon, i want my own now.

how do i start? should i get one of those big "all in one" sets? which one?

i used vallejo and GW paints so far, but feel strangely drawn to the armypainter big set somehow..

i hope with your help, i soon wont have to use cheap special effects when taking pictures What a Face

I suggest start with a small AP set of brushes and paints. You dont need anything else tbh

The only real way to find out which paints you like best is to try them all. Not practical to start off. So pick whichever paint set you like the look of and make a start. You don't need a hundred colours to begin with. Most people start small and add here and there as they need extra colours, or need a new palette for a new project. No point in buying 6 different reds if you're painting an army in blue Smile

thanksies.

can the paints be compared somehow? like: "AP has good pots with strong pigmented basecolors but the washes from citadel are nicer."  i guess it comes down to personal taste, but i wouldnt want to miss out on a good thing because i just bought what i know.
i did use the "game color" from vallejo, but they have this other range too.. are there big differences to be aware of? i like those paintbottles slightly better that the classic pot design, so i guess i venture in this direction first.

also i like those new effect-paints and want to try those out a bit more.

If you Google paint reviews and look on YouTube you'll find a lot of commentary. A great deal contradicts, which should tell you that there is less difference than some folk might want you to think.

I haven't painted myself for years, but having spent decades dealing with painters of every level, including many professionals, I'd say that outside GW's navel-staring bubble, nearly everyone who paints does so with a mix of different companies' products. I'd also say that the majority of professional painters I've heard comments from use Vallejo for the bulk of their paint, and cherry pick particular things from outside. Not always true, but very common.

Remember also that the particular qualities of a given paint range may be perfect for one style of painting, and not suit a different style at all. So when you watch a review, also look at the way that painter works, to judge whether their comments are relevant for you. For example, if a painter uses airbrush or thin washes then they will find thick paints need a lot of thinning to suit them. If they drybrush a lot then thin paints will be an issue...

Hope that helps.
