Uniqueness of Units Empty
PostSubject: Uniqueness of Units   Uniqueness of Units Empty14th February 2017, 3:08 am

With the huge number of units in the game, I'm wondering what the process was for evaluating if any units are too similar. It seems like a shame if two units were functional equivalents of each other. I thought of this after watching the beasts of war video; Odysseus seemed very unique.

Looking at Odysseus vs some of the other heroes, Agamemnon seemed to have very similar attributes (3 RP, 5 attack, 6 defense, bolster, leader, abilities that impact card drawing and activation) - Odysseus has 2 range, so a big difference there.

After another look, the Colchis Bull & Calydonian Boar also appear quite similar. (3 RP, 7 attack, 9v8 defense, 7v8 vitality, charge attack, area attack). A 3 vs 4 difference in activation cards seems meaningful.

Since I haven't played a full game, I'm not sure how much the subtle differences in these units will change the way they play. The reason I am asking is I love the variety, I just would hate it if some character never got picked because there was a similar, but better, character. I.e. never draft Colchis Bull because the Calydonian Boar is basically the same unit but faster (and that would be sad - I'd have to paint the boar ugly to make people want to avoid him to even things out).

It's a good question, and always something to consider.

The differences between units are sometimes stark, and sometimes subtle. When two units have subtle differences, it can appear that one is better than the other, though this is usually because one fits the player's style more.

For example, two units that are similar in stats, but which have a slight leaning to defence on the one hand, and attack on the other. Clearly, the more aggressive player would find the defensive one weaker, but this doesn't mean they are, just that it suits him less.

So far, our assessment is that all units have sufficient difference to give them a place in the game Smile

If anyone can suggest units which they feel don't sit well, then let us know and we'll let you know our thinking.

Hi Obsidiox,
As you mention the Boar versus the Bull, you may take a look at the previous comments we had on the units (comparing "chargers") on the forum used before finding this good place :

http://mbpantheon.actieforum.com/t51-colchis-bull-a-gift-hep

I am guessing we will resume analysing units when updated dashboards are available ^^

Yeah, the boar & bull were easy to use example, but honestly I wasn't that worried about them, their area attacks are enough different that i can see them used differently.

My curiosity was really more targeted at the army of smaller heroes and monsters who might fill common roles (i.e. a guard). The reason I was curious was I was thinking of something house rules for a best of 7 series, in which all characters can only be picked once - forcing the game to go deeper into the draft pool.
